indochine

indochine is a period piece starring catherine deneuve. it is situated in vietnam at a time when there is overflowing sentiment to liberate itself from france. the story opens with a haciendera, rich and beautiful, adopting a baby daughter of murdered mandarins. mandarins are regarded as the native ruling class to the french authorities and like feudal lords to the communists; as such are subject to assasinations.

the haciendera falls passionately in love with a marine officer but later separates. the adopted baby grows up and becomes a lovely vietnamese girl who later also falls for the same marine officer.

its an intertwined love story having the political situation as backdrop. and there are a number of interesting parallels to the filipino revolutionary movement against spain. for example the practice of senaculo.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars ***
